2. Safety First: Rails and Openings

If your playhouse is elevated (on stilts or a deck), railings are mandatory. Following residential code, vertical slats should be spaced no more than 4 inches apart to prevent a child's head from becoming stuck. All edges should be rounded over with a 1/4 inch router bit to prevent splinters. We also recommend using polycarbonate "shatterproof" windows instead of glass to ensure a safe environment even during rough play.

3. Healthy Materials and Finishes

Children have sensitive skin and frequently touch all surfaces. We strongly recommend using cedar or naturally rot-resistant wood for anything within reach, rather than older pressure-treated lumber. For the finish, use a water-based, VOC-free exterior stain. This provides the necessary protection from the elements without off-gassing harmful chemicals that your kids might breathe while they play.
